What does the rule require?
Directive (EU) 2022/2380 added common charging requirements to the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU). Mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, handheld videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earbuds that can be recharged by wire have needed the USB Type-C receptacle described in EN IEC 62680-1-3:2021 since 28 December 2024, and laptops since 28 April 2026.
Further obligations
Devices that support fast charging must also support the USB Power Delivery protocol. A pictogram on the packaging must show whether a charging device is included, consumers must be able to buy the product without one, and information on the charging characteristics must appear on the label.
For manufacturers
The charging receptacle, charging protocol and label information are part of the conformity assessment under the RED. Showing in the technical file how these requirements are met before placing a new model on the market prevents problems during market surveillance.
