Which dates matter?
Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 14 January 2027, and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is repealed on the same date. Products placed on the market in conformity with the Directive before that date may continue to be made available, and EC type-examination certificates issued under the Directive remain valid until they expire.
What changes in practice?
The regulation applies directly in all Member States. Instructions for use may now be provided in digital format: the product, or where that is not possible its packaging or an accompanying document, must indicate how to access them; they must be downloadable and printable, and remain accessible online during the expected lifetime of the product and for at least 10 years.
Whether your product falls into one of the machinery categories listed in Annex I of the regulation determines the conformity assessment route to follow. The applied standards, the risk assessment and the technical file should therefore be reviewed against the new regulation.
What should manufacturers do now?
For products to be placed on the market after 14 January 2027, update the declaration of conformity, technical file and instructions for use to the new regulation. For machinery with electrical equipment, the requirements of other EU legislation, such as EMC, should be handled in the same plan.
